On Female Masturbation Part 1: Frequency and Normalcy
So, how often do women masturbate? Is it normal? How much is too much? How much is not enough?
Because female masturbation is unfortunately still relatively taboo in our day and age, a lot of women may ask themselves these kinds of questions. Though surveys show that women masturbate less than men, women do indeed masturbate. Frequency of masturbation in women can range from once a month or less or every day, with most surveys showing the bulk of women falling into categories of a few times per year to monthly and a few times per month to weekly. One must consider though that these surveys are often skewed as women may tend to underreport! For some women, masturbation may come in waves; going for weeks or a month without doing it, and then doing it almost every day for two weeks. This is not abnormal. No matter how many times they do it, most women have done it and do it on a somewhat regular basis.
So what is a good amount? There is no real answer to this. Every woman has a different level of arousal. One should listen to their body and well, if you feel like doing it, do it! (At the right time and in the right place of course!) If you feel the need or desire to masturbate on a daily basis (hey maybe even twice a day) then go for it! There are many health benefits to masturbation that you may be surprised to learn. Masturbating can really help some relax and has been found to fight negative effects of stress, help you fall asleep and have a better deeper sleep. Also, women who masturbate have been found to have better sex lives and less self image issues. If you are having a difficult time reaching orgasms with a partner, masturbation could be the answer. Not only does it help you get in touch with your body and know what you like, but the more orgasms you have, the more your brain will learn how to have orgasms and they will most likely start to happen more easily! So if you have never dared to venture down there… it’s about time you should! You have nothing to lose…or to be ashamed of; what about this: you have my permission to masturbate guilt free! This being said, if you find the need to masturbate causing problems in your daily life (such as not being able to concentrate at work or not being able to sleep), if you find you are incapable of controlling your urges to masturbate (having to go to a public washroom or masturbating in public because you are unable to wait till you get home), or if you are no longer feeling desire for your partner (always choosing to masturbate over having sex with someone), than these are red flags indicating there is most likely a problem. If this is the case, talk to your doctor or a therapist who will be able to help you control your urges.
